Some Thoughts On Beast Mastery and How to Help Improve BM DPS

I’ve been giving it some thought lately, and REALLY think that all the BM Hunter’s are possibly gimping their DPS or at the least potential damage.   How? You ask?  By not speccing into the the BM Tree’s 51 Point Talent – Beast Mastery.

See many people read this talent as not being useful because it’s the “Exotic Pet” talent.  But that’s not the entire story.  The Tooltip for Beast Mastery says:

You master the art of Beast training, teaching you the ability to tame Exotic pets and increasing your total amount of Pet Skill Points by 4.

Now that means that instead of 16 points to spec out for your pet, you now have 20!!!  F-O-U-R that’s right 4 more talent points to apply to your Pet.  These additional pet training points apply to all of the pet classes NOT only the exotics.  The key word is “AND“.

I always like to think Blizz maybe was just a bit busy and when the put the tooltips together, mabye didn’t think of readability as necessary.

So the Brig Tooltip reads -

You master the art of Beast training increasing your total amount of Pet Skill Points by 4 (from 16 to 20).  Also, gives  you the ability to tame Exotic pets.

I don’t know about you, but reading it this way puts it in a whole new light for me.  It highlights that now I can either focus pet skills on helping increase survivability as well as improving damage.

For example, here’s something I threw together for a cat.  I can’t attest that this is perfect, but hopefully it’ll highlight my point for me.

So you can see by this, we now have a lot more available to us. I could have taken points out of charge and put into any stamina or other defensive ability.

This is just an example using a Cat or Ferocity pet. Think of a Cunning pet where they are already having some difficulties in managing damage output along with survivability.

Don’t let the Beast Mastery Talent fool you into thinking it means you have to go have an annoying Devilsaur (okay they’re cool the first few minutes) or camp for HOURS for Lok. You might not get their bonuses (and let’s face it, it’s not that huge at the moment) but you do get their benefit of the extra 4 points.

Give it some thoughts, then give me your feedback.
