Last week we talked about how Hunter’s today seem to be getting a bit sloppy in their play (link). Some of you felt that maybe I was decrying the end of Hunterdom as we know it. Well not entirely, but if we’re not careful, it really might mean that we will get less raid spots. If not that, then it will mean that we will have to work harder at proving ourselves. (Of course this is my opinion and not those of my readers.)
Well, how are we gonna compete against that? We are going to start the promised Hunter 101 series of posts.
Today, we’re going to focus on how you get started being a Hunter. You see, before you decide which race or faction your Hunter should be, you really should look around and see what it really means to be a Hunter.
You see, people really prefer to just shoot from the hip and start playing without reading anything. This is a game right? Why should anyone read about a class before they try it out. Hunters are just another easy class in an easy game. Right?
Well, what do you want me to say? That you absolutely have to read and do a ton of research? Absolutely not! But I would encourage you to carefully think about what race you want to play. Also, even if you have played WoW for a long time, as I have, things have changed a lot since then. It’s time to catch up on what’s been happening in the world and find out what the Hunter Class is all about.
So, let’s get started by defining what a Hunter is:
The hunter class performs pulling, threat redirection, crowd control, and primarily ranged damage. Hunters have pets that add to their DPS and help manage aggro. They can also track, tame and train animals and beasts found in the wild. – WoW Wiki
Hmm.. that doesn’t seem to tell the complete story so what does Blizzard say?
The Hunter is a vicious damage dealer. With their ability to pull extremely well and hit monsters hard from far away, they certainly help take down monsters more quickly. Their pets add to the damage count and can aid somewhat in managing monster aggro. The variety of traps allows the Hunter to control crowds to an extent, as well. The combination of their extreme range, decent damage, and trap capability, Hunters are the perfect pullers for any group. – Blizzard
Hmm.. that doesn’t seem quiet right either.. so let’s write our own definition using both of these.
The Hunter is a ranged damage dealer. In Raids and while Solo they partner with their pet, to help take down monsters more quickly. Hunter’s are effective Raiders by providing consistent damage from their arsonal of attacks, traps, and pets. While solo or in small groups, the Hunter can use his pet and/or traps to help maintain agro and crowd control.
There I think that’s better. So what’s your definition? And if your not sure, maybe go check out these blogs, read what they have to say, and see if you get a better understanding of the Hunter Class.
