As those of you that follow me on Twitter may have seen, I started a Tauren Hunter on the Hyjal Server. When I finally hit level 10, I could not wait to finish the quest to learn the Tame Beast skill.
After completing the quest, I was left with the question of what to tame for a first pet. My first pet, when leveling my Night Elf Hunter, was a bear. Being that the he was a tank pet, my friend advised me to get one of them. Now that I am an experienced hunter, it is best to use the proper pet for the task at hand.
I know there has been a long standing debate on pets and what everyone feels is the best pet. The debate has always been Tenacity vs. Ferocity vs. Cunning. Each pet class has its own uses and purposes.
Tenacity pets are best for tanking and soloing purposes. They have high hit points and can generate lots of threat. The downside to the class is that they do not do a lot of damage in comparison to the other pet classes. There is also an article on tenacity pets written by Brigwyn on WoW.com about soloing with a tenacity pet.
Ferocity pets are best used for DPS. They have high damage output. They also have a downside. The ferocity pet class has lower hit points and lower threat generation than the tenacity family of pets. You can also check out Brigwyn’s post on WoW.com about raiding with ferocity pets.
Cunning pets are a flexible pet class. They are very utilitarian. I have seen them used for soloing, raiding and PvP. Compared to the tenacity tree, the cunning class suffers from lower threat generation and health. This class also falls behind the ferocity tree in damage output. WoW.com has an article that goes into more detail on the topic of cunning pets and their uses.
Some Hunters chase after pets just because of a certain skin or type that they really want. I, for one, am guilty of this. At level 20, I farmed the area for the ghost saber. This is a spawned cat. As always, it spawns after fighting the nagas in the area. It was a race to see if it could be tamed before I ran out of hit points. There is nothing special about its abilities. It just looks really cool!
As you can see choosing a pet can be very difficult. You have tanking pets, DPS pets and pets that have other abilities. Some of them spit armor reducing acid. Others may immobilize your target. Your pet choice should, above all, compliment your playing style.
It is not uncommon for hunters to go through several pets before they find one that really fits their play style and spec. Get out there, experiment and find the pet that fits you best.
