More on GearScore

“This addon sounds a lot like Recount. It’s a good tool for individual or known use amongst a group of people. However, when used willy nillie, and applied to all, things are blown out of proportion. The author seems to understand this thankfully. However, he can’t control the masses.

The new RSS Armory feed has the ability that the author is looking to implement in his next version.

There is no addon replacement for actual class knowledge and play ability.”

“I believe that checking gearscore is just like asking where you went to school. A GREAT school does not necessarily mean you lived up to the potential of going to that school nor does it mean that you know what you are doing just because you did go there. Not a sole basis of evaluation but it does provide a quick and simple quantitative measure for forming groups to see about a POINT of qualification. I think its a relatively good thing as long as it is not taken so seriously. Talent and knowledge make up for a lot.”

Addons

  • Alakai <Dragon Alliance> Bronzebeard

“I would absolutely buy/donate to addons that does not pose a game advantage. Screen enhancements, UI adjustments, bags / friends orgainzation, etc is totally fine in my opinion. Just like the companion pets from before. No game advantage, no harm no foul to me.”

  • Mconniff  <Royal House of Azeroth> Arathor

“…my humble opinion I believe the creator of the AddOns should get recognition for their idea.  I believe that they should get a few donations for their idea.  But if a website is getting paid once a month to host my AddOn then I should get a check once a month too yes?  Where is the Maker’s Royalties & Recognition?

I fall into the category that I have to have X-Perl, DBM, Atlas Loot, GearScore, Fishing, and I think there are two more but I don’t remember their names.  Mostly used for Raid Leaders.  If I had to cull that list down I would drop everything but X-Perl & DBM.  I hope I haven’t vented too much but I feel the makers of the AddOns are not getting just recognition.  Everytime there is an update to the ones that I use via ‘Wowmatrix’ I toss them a couple of $$ unless it is near a holiday then I donate a 10 spot.  “

  • Darrien from Dawnbringer

“I just listened to your latest podcast, and was totally engaged by the discussion of wether players will pay $0.99 for an addon.  I totally agree with Brigwyn here.  Daewyn said that he doesn’t see the App Store model working in WOW.  I work in the wireless industry, and I really think he is wrong.  It is EXACLTY the same situation as the App Store model, and is totally applicable.  The key here is the fact that $0.99 is a negligible cost, but the sheer quantity of players makes it a viable incentive for developers.  People will bitch and moan about it, but they will still pay it.  Here’s what will happen:  1) Many players will initially stop using the addon out of protest.  2) After playing without it for a few days, they will miss their preffered UI, and go, “Man, $0.99 just isn’t that much.”  3) They buy the addon.   People said the same thing about mobile apps, that no one would pay for them.  But they do.  By the millions.”

“The simple way of getting rid of those who need the equipment would be by making that checkbox auto-shard every piece of boss loot, excepting orbs.  Therefore, no gear will be available for badge runs, and those looking for gear would find a pop-up confirmation box informing them that continuing would prevent them from getting loot.”
